On 1 June 2023, our colleagues Tom Roetert and Vassia Dagalaki presented the findings of their morphodynamics and scour study concerning IJmuiden Ver (IJV) Wind Farm Zone in the Dutch North Sea with a planned capacity of 6,000 MW, in a webinar hosted recently by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Their study contributes to the site information made available by RVO to reduce costs and uncertainties and enhance quality in offshore wind farm development in the Netherlands.

The target of their study was to analyze and describe the morphodynamics and scour at IJV as well as potential mitigation measures. With respect to morphodynamics, for TNW, they employed their inhouse state of the art data-analysis tools and Delft3D Flexible Mesh numerical modelling software. The tools are used to assess mobility of the seabed and to predict seabed over the lifetime of the wind farm. Analysis showed that the seabed in IJV is non-uniform including a number of prominent sand banks influencing the dynamic sand waves (particularly in IJV Alpha and Beta) with potential changes up to several meters. The seabed in IJV Gamma was found to be relatively stable.

Possible mitigation measures and spatial overviews of expected seabed level changes are also discussed in the webinar and in their reports. Regarding scour, for IJV, they employed their Dynamic Scour Prediction Model (DSPM) in a probabilistic approach to predict scour development over the lifetime and across the entire wind farm. DSPM predicted relatively slow but severe scour development around bottom-fixed foundations in IJV. Possible scour mitigation strategies including possibilities to design scour protections in IJV in an eco-friendly way are also discussed in the webinar and in their reports.
